The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Bill Carroll Post 9040, is now accepting applications for the annual Voice of Democracy competition. The Voice of Democracy competition is open to all students in grades 9-12 who are enrolled in a public, private, or home school program. To enter this year’s competition, students must submit an essay and a 3 to 5 minute recorded speech of that essay to VFW Post 9040 by October 31. This year’s essay theme is “America: Where Do We Go From Here?”

The winning entry of the local competition in Dillon will receive $100 from Post 9040 and their entry will be submitted for competition at the District and State level. The winner at the State level will then have their entry forwarded to the VFW National Headquarters to compete with entries from all over the country for up to $30,000 in scholarship prizes.

To obtain an entry form for the competition which explains all of the rules and entry procedures, students may contact Carol Perisho, Beaverhead County High School counselor, or any member of VFW Post 9040. Entry forms can also be downloaded from youthscholarships@vfw.org. Entries can then be returned to Perisho or a VFW member by Oct. 31.
