Getting sideways

Just into the second rodeo of the season, UMW coach Cody Lahaye missed on the sometimes guess work of picking the right team member to be on the scoring team. A coach picks five for the men’s team and four for the women’s team, while the rest of the squad competes as independents.

“We did good individually, but it was a tough rodeo on the team side,” said Lahaye. “The key is to pick the right ones. We had some kinds off-team that did pretty good, but our points team kids had a little bit of a rough weekend.”

Brody Smith is a points team member that always delivers. Smith works both ends of the arena, and at his home rodeo he split first and second in the bareback riding, placed third in team roping with UMW partner Jake Cerini, and missed his calf in tie down roping. When the points were totaled, Smith was awarded the All Around Cowboy buckle.

Smith had a bad draw in the long go of bareback and scored a lowly 58 with an option for a re-ride. He declined the option ad stuck with his score.

“When it is an average like that, it was a smart move,” said Lahaye. “If something would have happened he would have been out of the average. If it was a one-header like last week week, he would have taken the re-ride.”

Montana State dominated the men’s rodeo, though many winners were non-team members. The Bobcats swept the average in the tie down roping, saddle bronc, the first three spots in steer wrestling and the top two spots in team roping.

Northwest College of Powell, Wyoming took second on the team side buoyed by a 1-4 sweep in bull riding. Western placed third on the men’s team side.

For the women, Western had multiple competitors back to the short go. The short go is the top 10 from the long go which is all contestants competing one go round. The top 10 go on to the short go with a chance to place in the average.

The Lady Bulldogs earned a third place from Breanna Jenkins in breakaway roping, and a fourth place in goat tying. The team placed third.

For the MSU women, multievent competitor Hailey Garrison of the Glen area and BCHS graduate, finished second in goat tying.

This week, the Big Sky Region will compete in Glendive at the Dawson Community College Rodeo, followed the next weekend at Havre and MSU-Northern. The region will then take a break until the spring season starts.
