Reba “Jo” Tryon Mitchell 1933-2021

Reba Jo was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma, on October 15, 1933. She was the second of five children born to Clarence Tryon and Edna (Miller) Tryon. Her youngest brother, Jimmy, was her responsibility. As was common in Oklahoma at the time, she only stayed in school through the sixth grade. She later completed her GED and even several semesters of college at Montana Western.

Reba Jo met the love of her life, Don Mitchell, during the Korean War. They married on Aug. 18, 1951. To this union were born Michael Don, Kathy Jo, Pamela Sue, and Janet Leigh. The children were raised in Dillon with many of their years spent at the family residence on West Helena Street.

Reba Jo’s working years included being a nurse’s aide at the old Barrett Memorial Hospital and Parkview Acres, and at MH Kings department store, both inside and at their greenhouse . She was also often seen supporting cast and characters at Bannack. Other adventures in her life saw her working along with her daughter Pamela at Loretta Lynn’s ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, and even at the Snowcrest Ranch when it was under the ownership of the Von Trapp family. She was known for seamstress, quilting, knitting, and crocheting skills, as well as gardening and canning. She passed June 1, 2021.

Reba Jo was preceded in death by daughter Pamela, husband Don and grandson Nathan May.

She is survived by son Michael (Sharon), daughters Kali and Janet, and several nieces and nephews.
