Steve Geiger went to work Saturday morning at Vigilante Park piling snow to make his son Cedar’s seventh birthday a special event. Geiger, an avid backcountry skier for some 20 years, shoveled snow for three hours with plans in mind to have the kids build a quinzhee which is the Athapaskan word for snow shelter. The guests, guest of honor and parents showed up at 2 p.m. and the construction began. The sugary snow packed surprisingly well and with Steve’s help, the kids had soon built their own little snow fort.

With sundown approaching, the group left the construction site and headed off to the home of Steve and his wife Adrienne Bull for chili and other warm goodies as the party continued without the need for gloves, hats and other cold weather gear.
