Lady Beavs undefeated in conference

The Dillon Lady Beavers improved to 3-0 in conference and 5-2 in all games over a weekend in which Dillon thumped rival Butte Central, 51-32, as the opener in a doubleheader with the Maroons on Friday night. The Beavers traveled to Stevensville Saturday and barely escaped with a win.

Dillon jumped out early on the Maroons and were never threatened en route to a 51-32 victory.

“I thought the big difference in that game was offensive rebounds,” said Dillon coach John Hansen. “We had 18 and we held them to 3 or 4. That enabled us to make easy baskets inside, and we shot pretty good from the threepoint-line.”

Butte Central is a guard-oriented team much like Dillon, and Hansen employed zone defensive looks in the half-court to disrupt Central’s drive and kick offense. The Maroons like to penetrate with the dribble and kick the ball out for perimeter treys.

“With our 1-2-2 zone, they couldn’t really drive on us so they had to resort to passing it around,” said Hansen.

Likewise, Central’s ball handlers handled Dillon’s press, be it the 1-2-1-1, the 2-2-1 or the man press. Dillon didn’t force the high number of turnovers they are used to cashing in for layups on the offensive end.

“We didn’t rely on our steals for layups, so we had to score in other ways and we did,” said Hansen.

Ainsley Shipman, a sophomore, continued her impressive statistical streak with 14 points as high scorer, and despite being listed at 5-6, she snared 14 rebounds and blocked a shot.

Josey Jones injured her ankle around half-time, but before departing scored 11 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, made 3 steals.

Senior Kylee Pittman continued her offensive outburst with 10 points and 9 rebounds, and sophomore Lauryn Petersen scored 8 with 7 boards and 3 assists.

“Our emphasis was 32 minutes of intensity,” said Hansen. “Defensively, we executed well for the most part, we shut down their strength.”

Saturday night at Stevensville, the Lady Beavers faced a Yellowjacket team that was hovering near the bottom of the Southwestern A standings. Dillon struggled throughout the contest and emerged with a narrow 35-33 victory.

“It was an ugly win to tell you the truth,” admitted the Dillon coach.

Without top scorer Josey Jones, down with an injury, Dillon managed to hit just 2 of 17 shots from the threepoint line and attempted just 2 free throws compared to 18 attempts by the homestanding ‘Jackets’.

“We didn’t execute offensively very well,” said Hansen.

While struggling from the field, Dillon managed to snag 32 rebounds and make 13 steals and block 7 shots.

“Our pressure was very important, especially in the third quarter,” said Hansen. “Lauryn Peterson did an excellent job as far as anticipating. We went on a 10-0 run that gave us the lead going into the fourth quarter and we never gave it up.”

Dillon needed the lead as the Lady Beavers managed just 2 points in the fourth quarter of a two-point victory.

Petersen’s anticipation allowed her to jump into passing lanes to force turnovers and lead scoring charges at the other end. The sophomore scored a team-high 12 points, Tylia DeJohn and Ainsley Shipman added 6 points each, and Abby Brevig scored 5 in the first quarter to keep Dillon in the game early.

Dillon visits AA Belgrade on Thursday and hosts Hamilton Saturday in a first place showdown.
