The Dillon Beavers were 6-0 and ranked fourth in the first 406 MT Sports poll of the season when they traveled to Butte last Tuesday to take on the single loss Bulldogs. Things didn’t go so well.

“I don’t think they were necessarily a better team than we were, they just executed offensively and defensively better than we did,” said Dillon coach John Hansen. “They were unselfish with the ball where times I think we forced things. Give them credit, they made better decisions than us.”

Butte crushed Dillon, 57-43, and there wasn’t a lot of good to say other than, “Don’t play like that.”

Dillon learned from the painful lesson and put together a pair of quality games versus Frenchtown and Hamilton, at home Friday and Saturday. The two wins place Dillon in sole possession of first place in the Southwestern A standings.

Dillon beat Frenchtown, 63-43, and topped one loss Hamilton, 47-36.

Hansen said Ainsley Shipman did a masterful job shutting down Hamilton’s returning league MVP Layne Kearns. Shipman held Hamilton’s top scorer to 4 points, all in the fourth quarter.

Dillon faces Butte Central Thursday.
