The Dillon Lady Beavers posted a 5-1 record in pool play in their season debut at the SW vs NW TipOff Tournament at Ronan on Friday and Saturday. Dillon beat five of the six teams from the Northwestern A in pool play, falling only to homestanding Ronan, to qualify for the third place match in the single elimination tourney format Saturday afternoon. Dillon lost to Polson to finish in fourth place.

“It went awesome, we saw great things and we played real well together,” said Dillon coach Charelle Hinkey. “It was very encouraging.”

Hinkey felt the teams keys to success were good defense and successful serving.

“We played defense really well together and moved well as a team,” said the coach. “We capitalized on everybody knowing their job and doing their job. We served really well which was huge for us.”

Hinkey selected Lauren Petersen as the team’s setter in the 5-1 line-up and Petersen played well.

“We did run a 5-1, and I think having a consistent setter was helpful so that everyone knew their job,” the coach said.

Senior middle blocker Evey Hansen led the team in kills with 32, followed by Ainsley Shipman with 22, Jordyn Walker with 21, and Zoey Morast with 17. Sage Hansen added 13 in combined stats for the weekend.

“All of our hitters hit really well and were able to diversify our offense so that we didn’t have just one person that was hitting the ball all of the time,” Hinkey said. “I think they did a really good job of seeing the court, putting the ball in smart places and avoiding the block.”

Hinkey feels the team needs to continue to develop hitting skills and become stronger at the net.

“Hitting is really going to be our focus and continuing to work on serving tough and serving to specific spots,” the coach said.

Dillon travels to Manhattan on Saturday for the Shake, Rattle and Roll Tourney.
