Just a clarification on the donation

I would like to take this opportunity to clarify the information presented in the headline article about the Beaverhead County Museum in last week’s Dillon Tribune. The Friends of the Museum, DBA as the Beaverhead County Museum Association, is the recipient of the large donation because the Friends organization can hold the money is a separate account. The money will be used to fund things that the Museum cannot afford and that are necessary to its operation. For example, the Friends have been asked to contribute $11,000 to keep the doors open in fiscal year 21-22.

The first $25,000 will be donated outright. Over the next five years the Friends of the Museum i.e., the BCMA needs to meet that donation to receive it. The Friends of the Museum is the 501(c)(3) tax deductible organization that helps to support the needs of the Museum. The name of the Association has been modified to clarify the difference between the two organizations. Most people do understand that the Association is separate from the County Museum but there seems to continue to be confusion as to the purpose of the organizations. The Museum Director and its board of Trustees is responsible for running the day-to-day operations while the Friends is the supporting group.

The money received will be used to support the museum as will any donations made to match the $25,000 in the upcoming years. Because the Museum receives only two mills of tax money, it is responsible for the remaining money needed to operate.

The Friends organization has also been asked to purchase a program called the mobile museum suite that lets patrons connect with exhibits on their own mobile device.
