Each and every year since 1930 at the Beaverhead County High School graduation, there is the presentation of the Alumni Cup. For the class of 2022, Evelyn Hansen became the recipient during the school’s 114th commencement ceremony.

At the recent graduation ceremony, BCHS Assistant Principal John English announced, “The recipient of the Alumni Cup is chosen based on four characteristics: scholarship, leadership, service and character. Since 1956 (1930), this award has been given to the graduating senior that the Beaverhead County High School staff believes best embodies these four characteristics. The trophy is located in the entryway of the high school. On it is a list of all the past winners and every year the recipient is awarded with a plaque at graduation.”

“This year’s Alumni Cup winner is a valedictorian, student government leader, and an award winning musician and athlete. She is a tireless volunteer in her church and community and in addition to all that she is one of the kindest people you will ever meet… Evelyn Hansen.”

The Alumni Cup winner is a student of character and multiple interests and accomplishments. A student who is not only successful on the academic side at BCHS, but also one that is a positive role model for other students and leads by the strength of their character. The name inscribed each year on the Alumni Cup is decided by a vote of the BCHS staff.

Hansen, one of eight valedictorians in her class, certainly has the resume that earned her the distinction of receiving the award.

Some of Hansen’s activities and involvements include: Band, National Honor Society, volleyball, basketball, Key Club, FCCLA, Student Council, Honor Society, Be The Change Coalition, Youth Legislature, Academic Olympics, B Club, IT Club, pep band, symphonic band, jazz band, Youth Connections, Yearbook, National Society of Daughters of American Revolution, classroom volunteer at Dillon Middle School, church volunteer, church camp counselor and vacation bible school leader.

Hansen was also a senior captain of the Lady Beaver basketball team (conference champions, fourth at state A), Academic All-State in volleyball and basketball, All-Southwestern A in volleyball and basketball, received numerous superior ratings at district and state music festivals, was published in American Library of Poetry, and won the Be the Change Student Service Award.

After graduation, Evelyn will attend Gordan College in Wenham Massachusetts to pursue a degree in social work. She is the daughter of Burke and Holly Hansen.
