The Dillon Beavers struggled to find consistency Friday night at Hamilton and against the defending state A champions that didn’t work out so well.

“We got punched in the mouth by a team that was well prepared and excited to play us,” said Dillon coach Zach McRae. “When we looked back on film there was just so many things that we did well. Like I told them after the game, we were a lot closer that the score alludes to.”

Hamilton used a size-strength-experience advantage in the trenchs to hammer out the win. Hamilton’s size up front worked perfectly for the Broncs as that unit went against Dillon’s solid but inexperienced lines.

Hamilton would out-gain Dillon 367 yards to 242 yards, but Dillon had just 48 plays to Hamilton’s 71. On a per play basis, the team’s averaged just over 5 yards per play.

Hamilton’s edge came on fourth down where they continued to extend drives by converting rather than punting. The strategy included two touchdowns on fourth downs. Hamilton attempted seven fourth down conversions and failed on the first, an interception by David Schmidlin. Hamilton converted on six fourth down attempts.

Defensively, Hamilton blitzed on a high percentage of Dillon’s offensive plays, and the young linemen struggled with the tactic putting Dillon’s offense in tough scenarios.

Dillon had a touchdown pass dropped at the goal line in the first quarter that could have given Dillon an early 7-6 lead. One of many correctable flaws in Dillon’s game Friday night.

“We are on a season-long grind to get better each week,” said McRae. Coming out at halftime I thought we punched them in the mouth a little bit and got after them.”

Dillon plays Corvallis Friday night in their first home appearance of the season.
