The University of Montana Western volleyball team leveraged fast starts to gain its first victory at its first tournament of the young 2021 season last weekend in Caldwell, ID.

Playing their second match at the three-day College of Idaho Fall Classic on Friday, the Lady Bulldogs leveraged fast starts to master The Masters University, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-18).

Abby Schwager notched 13 assists, the same number of digs recorded by Jazi Smith and Kelsey Goddard for UMW in its sweep of The Masters, which also suffered from 8 kills by Morgan Stenger and 4 aces by Kaylee Kopp.

The broom got turned on the Western women in their other three matches of the tough tourney, with straight set losses to the hosts, and to Eastern Oregon, (the 14th ranked team in the NAIA) and to no. 5 Dordt College from Iowa.

Up next for the Lady Bulldogs, a short break from competitive action and then another long road trip, this one in the other direction, to North Dakota to compete at the Dickinson State University Crossover tourney in matches against the hosts and Valley City State University.

The Lady Bulldogs will not host their 2021 home opener until Sept. 24, when they welcome their counterparts from Carroll College to Straugh Gymnasium in Dillon.
