Bernice Hansen Lowney 1932-2021

Bernice Hansen Lowney passed away Sept. 5, 2021 at the age of 89. She was born Aug. 23, 1932 at home on the family ranch in Dell, Montana, to Danish immigrant parents Amos and Anna Hansen. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in Dell and graduated from Lima High School. She then attended Western Montana College and met her future husband, David Lowney. They lived in Butte, Montana, before moving to California in 1960 and settled in Newark, California. Bernice retired from Newark Unified School District as a Special Education aide, was an active member at her Church and volunteered in community organizations. She was a 48-year breast cancer survivor.

She is survived by her five children: Kristine, Dorothy, Denise, David and Katy and their spouses, all living in California; five grandchildren; a sister Anna Meyer of Sidney, British Columbia, Canada; brother Ejner Hansen of Miles City, Montana; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a grandson; her parents; and sisters Astrid and Mary.

A funeral Mass was at St. Edward Catholic Church in Newark. Graveside services will be in Whitehall, Montana, Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021 at 11 a.m. Memorials may go to Saint Mary’s Mission, Tohatchi, New Mexico, P.O. Box 39, Tohatchi, NM 87325.
