Dillon is the seat of Montana's vast, historic Beaverhead County. It is the major trading center for more than 13,000 people in Beaverhead and western Madison counties.
Important major highways, including I-15 and state routes, converge at Dillon, creating a natural shopping center.
Dillon also forms the center of Montana’s largest cattle and hay producing areas, and is one of Montana’s top agriculture centers.
With a total population of more than 9,200 in Beaverhead County, and nearly 7,700 in Madison County, the area provides an effective buying income of more than $150 million annually.

Recreation – including hunting, fishing, hiking and camping – along with a thriving tourist industry focused on the local Western history make Dillon and vicinity a truly noteworthy vacation destination. The city is also home to the University of Montana Western, one of the original units of the state's post-secondary education network.
