#3 BCHS boys basketball, 2nd at state A

ALL-STATE A AND SOUTHWESTERN A CO-MVP JONATHAN KIRKLEY AND SOUTHWESTRN A COACH OF THE YEAR TERRY THOMAS DURING THE 2021 STATE A TITLE GAME VERSUS BILLINGS CENTRAL.

The Dillon Beavers felt the sting of defeat for the first time during the 2021 season in their final game of the year, a state championship loss to Billings Central. Dillon (19-1) fell behind big in the first half, rallied back from a 16-point deficit to cut Central’s lead to 5, before time became a factor and the Beavers had to employ the fouling strategy. Central canned their free throws to win the title game, 49-39. The Beavers won early and often during the season and entered the state tourney as the top-ranked squad in Class A.

The Beavers opened the state tournament with an easy win over Hardin, 53-32, but then struggled in the semifinal with Laurel. Senior Jace Fitzgerald hit a key three-pointer, and juniors Connor Curnow and Jon Kirkley worked their all-around games to lead Dillon to a 53-48, double overtime victory.

Dillon coach Terry Thomas ended the season with a 291-65 record during his 16 years as head coach. Under Thomas’ direction, Dillon has won 5 state titles in 9 state title game appearances.
