Dawgs stage late comeback to beat Tech

Four scores, four days and at least seven remarkable plays ago, University of Montana Western Bulldog Nation faced what looked like a dispiriting Homecoming defeat on Saturday in the 100th rendition of its southwest Montana civil war with archrival Montana Tech.

But the Bulldogs counterattacked late and often, overwhelming the Orediggers with four, unanswered fourth-quarter touchdowns to gain an astounding 32-19 victory before the roar of a packed Vigilante Field on a drizzly, muddy afternoon in Dillon.

Montana Western men third, women second in Big Sky Region standings after fall season

The Montana Western Rodeo Club hosted the Big Sky Region on Sept. 28-30 for the final rodeo of the fall season. Western hands placed well, but first-year coach Kody Lahaye picked wrong in terms of the scoring hands on the men’s and womens teams. The Western men ended up fourth and the women fifth at their own rodeo.

“The rodeo went smooth all weekend,” said Lahaye. It got a little cold. A couple kids on the points team had a bad weekend. We have quite a few good kids, so sometimes its hard to pick the points team.”

It was a rough start in Hamilton for the three Dillon golfers who qualified for state. Hamilton’s tree-lined golf fairways and small greens challenges a golfers accuracy. Dillon’s golfers struggled, but rebounded in the second round to finish strong. “I’m proud of the three that made it to state and I’m proud of the way they played in the second round,” said Dillon coach Justin Roberts. “They were all disappointed after the first round, but did not give up.

It didn’t take long for the Beavers to establish dominance over Stevensville in their Homecoming match-up at Vigilante Field. Dillon scored six first quarter touchdowns to build a 42-7 lead and cruise to the Southwestern A Conference victory. The Beavers were blasted themselves early in the year by Columbia Falls, so they know that pain. Since then, the Beavers have flown under the state-wide radar, picking up momentum with crushing efficiency.

Montana Western to induct Athletic Hall of Fame class Sat.

Brian Armstrong is a 1998 graduate of the University of Montana Western. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education as well as competed on the football team at Montana Western from 1992-1995. Armstrong was a member of the Bulldog teams that won three straight Frontier Conference championships making it to the second round of play-offs in 1995 and finishing seventh in the nation. Armstrong was named to the All-Frontier Conference Team in both 1994 and 1995. For his outstanding play in 1995, Armstrong was named first team All-American.

Games of flag rugby and a BBQ will happen today, Wednesday, Oct. 3, on the University of Montana Western campus tundra, starting at 5 p.m., hosted by the Rugby Club and Kappa Sigma.

The University of Montana Western volleyball team gave the University of Providence a good game last weekend in Dillon, and even took a set from the Lady Argos, though not the match. Taking advantage of 44 UMW errors, Providence topped the Lady Bulldogs, 3-1, in the Saturday afternoon match at Straugh Gymnasium. Things started relatively well in the first set for the Lady Dawgs, who are still searching for their first league win of the season.

With off-street parking requirements in the city’s central business district set to expire at the end of this week (see story on page 1) the city council will tonight, as part of an otherwise light agenda, consider a slight adjustment concerning an issue that has inspired a lot of heated discussion and heartache over the past half decade.

“That was crazy, man,” said University of Montana Western Head Coach Ryan Nourse of his Bulldogs’ 54-51 loss at Eastern Oregon University on Saturday.

“That was a really wild football game,” added Nourse of a game that somehow managed to keep getting wilder and crazier the longer it went on.

It ended in appropriately unlikely and elongated fashion in the third overtime.

Lady Beavers drop two matches

After opening the season with a 3-0 start, the Dillon Lady Beavers lost a top player and momentum in a sport that is fueled by momentum. While regrouping and focusing on defensive basics, Dillon has dropped three straight matches, albeit, to two strong teams. Dillon fell to AA Butte High in a home and away series and then on Saturday, lost to conference favorite Corvallis.

“We definitely have some work to do,” said Dillon coach Susanne Valach. “Both teams have good hitters that we were primarily concerned with, but more than anything, our serve-receive was more of a struggle.”
