The Montana Western football team on Saturday settled into its new home on the perch atop the Frontier Conference by doing what they’ve come to regularly do this year, and also by doing something they hadn’t done in many years—beat Carroll College for the second time in a single season.

Beavs CC head to state this weekend, UMW Dawgs to host home meet

The Dillon Beavers cross-country team last weekend prepared for its coming biggest meet of the season while the University of Montana Western runners got ready to host their first-ever home meet this weekend.

The Beavs persevered through some of the worst that the bad weather on Saturday had to dish out to get to that day’s Western A Classic at Rebecca Farm in Kalispell, where they got personal best efforts from four runners and an all-conference performance from another.

The Dillon Beavers handled a talented Corvallis Blue Devil team Friday night in their final regular season home game, and now face Hamilton on the road for the Southwestern A Conference title. The battle for the crown starts at 7 p.m. Friday night.

Lady Beavs close with two wins at Blocktober in Butte

The Dillon Lady Beavers opened last week with an 0-3 loss at conference favorite Corvallis, but rebounded at a tournament in Butte on Saturday to gain momentum heading into the final regular season games, including Thursday night’s Senior Night game against Butte Central.

In Butte Saturday, the Beavers posted a 1-3 mark in pool play, but rebounded with a pair of 2-0 wins over Hamilton and Livingston in the consolation bracket.

“We served really well all day,” said Dillon coach Susanne Valach. “That really helps when you’re taking teams out of system right away.”

Dawgs stage late comeback to beat Tech

Four scores, four days and at least seven remarkable plays ago, University of Montana Western Bulldog Nation faced what looked like a dispiriting Homecoming defeat on Saturday in the 100th rendition of its southwest Montana civil war with archrival Montana Tech.

But the Bulldogs counterattacked late and often, overwhelming the Orediggers with four, unanswered fourth-quarter touchdowns to gain an astounding 32-19 victory before the roar of a packed Vigilante Field on a drizzly, muddy afternoon in Dillon.

Montana Western men third, women second in Big Sky Region standings after fall season

The Montana Western Rodeo Club hosted the Big Sky Region on Sept. 28-30 for the final rodeo of the fall season. Western hands placed well, but first-year coach Kody Lahaye picked wrong in terms of the scoring hands on the men’s and womens teams. The Western men ended up fourth and the women fifth at their own rodeo.

“The rodeo went smooth all weekend,” said Lahaye. It got a little cold. A couple kids on the points team had a bad weekend. We have quite a few good kids, so sometimes its hard to pick the points team.”

Dale Royer wins junior shotgun national championship

Jackson’s Dale Royer equaled a Junior Finals world record with 48 of 50 targets at the USA Shooting National Championship for Shotgun in trap shooting at the International Shooting Park at Colorado Springs, Colorado last week.

Roe Reynolds of Quitman, Arkansas, placed second in the men’s national trap finals, and then finished second to Royer in the Junior finals. Logan Lucas of Pacific, Missouri won the bronze. Lucas won the Junior Men’s World Championship silver medal earlier this year.

Royer will qualify for international competitions with the victory.

Beaver runners continue to improve in cross country

Personal bests posted by a quartet of its runners highlighted the Dillon Beavers cross-country girls and boys teams’ trip to Helena last week for the annual Helena 7 on 7 meet.

“Ti’el Lochridge ran one of her better races of the year. She had her best time on a pretty hilly course, and not a fast course,” noted Dillon Head Coach Betty Iverson of the impressive race run by the BCHS senior at the Bill Roberts Golf Course in the state’s capital.
