The University of Montana Western football defense staged a TFL exhibition game on Saturday at Vigilante Field on Saturday.

Red-shirted Bulldog defenders stuffed the opening play behind the line of scrimmage and recorded a whole lot more TFLs (tackles for loss) in the hour-plus scrimmage against the white-jerseyed offense.

Kids need bowhunter instructor for Dillon

As Montanans of all ages continue to take an interest in learning archery, more bowhunter education instructors are needed to accommodate that interest in coming years.

Currently, Region 3 has 56 active bowhunter education volunteer instructors to serve a population spread over seven southwestern Montana counties with a need for more. That need is likely felt greatest in more rural areas, especially in Beaverhead County. There, longstanding instructors retired in recent years leaving Dillon without a formal bowhunter education course in 2017 and none yet planned for 2018.

Big Hole fishing access closed Saturday

Salmon Fly Fishing Access Site on the Big Hole River at Melrose will be closed to all vehicles Friday, April 13, so that FWP can replace the cattle guard.

Finny named to Montana Coaches Associastion Hall of Fame

The Montana Coaches Association (MCA) announced this week that six Montana coaches will be inducted into the MCA Hall of Fame. Former Beaverhead County High School coach Craig “Finny” Finberg heads the list of inductees that also includes Dillon native Pat Lynch.

The induction ceremony will be a part of the Awards Ceremony at the MCA Coaches Clinic on August 2 at Great Falls.

Big Hole teen racks up wins in semipro snowmobiling

Rough sledding conditions wiped out most of this winter’s early-season Rocky Mountain States HillClimb Association (RMSHA) itinerary. Though that didn’t prevent some elite area snowmobilers from excelling at recent events.

The Big Hole Valley’s Sam Peterson continued his climb up the semipro ranks in races over the past month while Dillon’s Keith Curtis prolonged his run of excellence as one of the world’s leading pro competitors.

UMW places four on NAIA AA teams

The Montana Western men’s and women’s basketball teams fine showings at their recent national tournaments got reflected in four of their players showing up on the season-end NAIA All-American teams announced last week.

UMW point guards Brianna King and Dom Robinson gained spots on their respective NAIA All-American first teams, while Zaccheus Darko-Kelly earned selection to the men’s second team and Brandon Jones got an honorable mention nod.
