Tech tops UMW men in tourney thriller

Montana Tech leveraged a late driving bucket by its star Sindou Diallo to vault over the University of Montana Western for a 70-68 wiin in the semifinals of the Frontier Conference men's basketball tourney on Friday in Butte.

The result sends Montana Tech to the tourney final Monday in Helena, where top seed Carroll College scored a 70-63 victory over MSU-Northern in Friday evening's other semifinal tourney showdown.

The Dillon Lady Beavers cruised into the Southwestern A District Tournament championship game at 18-1, with nothing but momentum on their side. An hour and one-half later, the team was searching for their shot and confidence after falling to Hamilton, 43-23, in a game dominated by the Lady Broncs from start to finish.

Dillon led for the overwhelming majority of their Saturday night Southwestern A District championship game with Butte Central only to fall late on heroics by Maroon start Dougie Peoples, a 6-4 junior. Peoples converted a four-point play to complete a Central rally for the trophy on Dillon’s home floor.

The Dillon Lady Beavers and Beavers enter the Western A Divisional at Hamilton on Thursday coming off rare losses. The Dillon boys face Libby at 3 p.m., and the girls play Ronan at 6:30 p.m. At the Western C in Frenchtown, the Twin Bridges girls open with Philipsburg on Thursday at 5 p.m.
