Dawgs sweep Saints

Two Dawg Night: Shyke Smalls (shown here in a game last season against Carroll in Dillon) led the Montana Western Bulldog men's basketball team to a runaway victory over no. 6 Carroll College on Wednesday night in Helena, where the Lady Bulldogs notched a win two hours earlier on a last-second shot by Kaye Bignell.

The Montana Western men’s and women’s basketball teams registered a rare Frontier Conference road sweep of their Carroll College counterparts on Wednesday in Helena.

The Bulldogs pulled off the victories over the nationally ranked and previously undefeated Saints teams in equally stunning, if decidedly different, fashions.

UMW forward Kaye Bignell hit a 15-foot turnaround shot with just over six seconds remaining to give the Western women a 65-64 victory over the no. 25 Lady Saints.

Two hours later, the no. 17 Montana Western men staged a furious comeback to return from the presumed dead, rallying from 22 points down in the first half to post a comfortable 99-85 victory over the Carroll men, who came into the game ranked no. 6 in the NAIA.

Shyke Smalls led the Bulldogs with a college career-high 34 points and a half-dozen steals, as the Western men improved to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the Frontier Conference.

Paced by 20 points from Aniese Palmore, the Western women upped their overall record to 11-0 and conference mark to 2-0 with their victory.

The Montana Western men will have 12 days off from competitive action before playing a series of three games in three days, Dec. 19–21, at the Chandler-Gilbert Classic in Arizona.

The Lady Bulldogs get three weeks off before their next game, a Dec. 29 showdown with Dickinson State University at a holiday tournament in Billings, which will pit UMW against the University of Calgary the following day.
