Candidate Forum: Jeff Welborn – incumbent candidate for House District 72

Jeff Welborn

Representative Jeff Welborn (R-Dillon) serves constituents of the 72nd district in the Montana House of Representatives.

I’m a life-long Beaverhead County resident and a fourth-generation Montanan. My business and professional life away from serving you in Montana’s House of Representatives, includes ownership of a trailer sales and truck equipment dealership, partner in a family owned livestock grass and grazing operation, and also operate a contract auctioneering firm that specializes in business liquidation and large scale fundraising & benefit auctions.

I have served as a director for numerous organizations representing Montana agriculture, and auctioneering, as well as land owner and sportsman groups. I have traveled extensively to the Far East, Pacific Rim and European Union countries on trade missions representing the agriculture and tourism industries here in Montana

I currently serve as Potentate (Chairman of the Board) of the Bagdad Shriners, and a Past Legislative Member of the Pacific Northwest Economic Region. I also serve on the Beaverhead- Deer Lodge N.F. Resource Advisory Council and recently served on The FWP Private Lands Public - Wildlife Council, Past Director of YMCA, and Past Director of Montana Farm Bureau Federation. In my capacity as your Representative, I serve as Chair of House Fish & Game, Committee on Business & Labor, as well as 3 separate interim Legislative Committees one of which I chair, the rest of which I serve as a Ranking Member of House Republicans.

Some of my past legislative accomplishments have been securing funding for re-construction of Old- Main Hall and Beier Auditorium on the campus of UM-Western, continued Support of Youth Challenge, and Co-Sponsorship of the legislation that has reformed the troubled Workers Compensation system in Montana. During 2013 session I served as a Majority Whip, co- sponsored Education reform that focuses on student achievement as well as lowering local property taxes, while shifting revenue from oil and gas production, and I also chaired the committee that reformed wolf management policy, reaching a more effective solution for both livestock producers and wildlife managers.

In my spare time, I like to travel the world, ski fresh powder at Maverick Mountain and Discovery Basin, tour the U.S and Canada by motorcycle, cook for friends and large groups in my take anywhere outdoor kitchen, camp in the mountains, and help with the fund raising efforts of Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.
