Mabel Louise Hilliker

1920 – 2014
Mabel Louise Hilliker

Mabel Louise Hilliker, 93, passed away peacefully on Feb. 28, 2014, at Ruby Valley Hospital in Sheridan.

She was born to Gertrude and Louis Barbezat on Sept. 29, 1920, in Twin Falls, ID, the last of eight children born to the Barbezats.

Unfortunately, Gertrude passed away during Mabel’s first year and her Aunt Louise then stepped in, offering to take Mabel off the family farm to raise her herself.

Her aunt, a traveling minister, preached the Lord’s words as Mabel grew up. Mabel attended grade school, middle school and high school in several locations in eastern Colorado and western Kansas, as her beloved aunt preached.

Mabel attended Central Christian College, in Kansas, and then moved to Chicago to enroll in music school. After a short time, she moved to Oakland, CA, and met Frank Hilliker. After a short romance, they were married on Sept. 29, 1944, in Oakland, where Frank was stationed in the Navy.

Frank and Mabel had three children: Raymond; Cheryl; and Gary. Around 1955, they all moved to Denver, CO, where Frank started his own business. Mabel was a homemaker, along with taking on secretarial duties for Frank’s business. It wasn’t long before the business grew into a successful endeavor called Hilliker Hydraulics, Inc. In addition to running its business, the entire family was active and involved in its church, Lakewood Church of the Nazarene.

After Frank passed away in 1990, Mabel moved to Dillon to be closer to Gary and his wife, Doris. Mabel then relocated to Sheridan in the mid-1990s because Gary and Doris had relocated from Dillon to Sheridan.

As Mabel celebrated birthdays and the years went by, she found herself in her late eighties and still living in her own home. Barbara Sanchez, Lori Burwell and Julie Tash became her loving caregivers until November 2012, when Mabel’s new home became Tobacco Roots Mountain Care Center in Sheridan.

Over the years, Mabel had many interesting hobbies. She and Frank traveled to many exotic places around the world. They also enjoyed their tropical bird hobby, with a collection of hundreds in an aviary they built off the back of their home. Mabel loved to read romance novels, knit and crochet. She thoroughly enjoyed and pampered her faithful Bichon Frise dogs.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Frank; and son Raymond, in 1989.

She is survived by: son Gary (wife, Doris) and daughter Cheryl (husband, Jim). Grandchildren are: John and Michael Hilliker; Scott Dean (wife, Jessica); Sharon Griffin; Jamie and Jarod Hilliker. Also, there are numerous great-grandchildren.

Mabel’s life was truly enhanced when she moved into Tobacco Roots Mountain Care Center. The staff there immediately embraced her as family.

There will be viewing at K & L Mortuary, in Sheridan, and services celebrating Mabel’s life will be at Bethel Methodist Church, in Sheridan, today at 11 a.m. A reception/luncheon will follow at Bethel Hall. Then, graveside services, at Mountain View Cemetery in Dillon, will take place at approximately 2 p.m.
