The No. 2-ranked Dillon Beavers cruised through the Southwestern A tournament with a pair of 20-plus point victories to secure a position in the State A bracket.

Dillon pounded Corvallis, 59-38, in the semifinal round and defending state A champion Stevensvillie, 55-34, in the championship game played Saturday night at the Maroon Activity Center in Butte.

The two regular season games between Dillon and Stevi featured wild, second half comebacks by the eventual winner in the series split. There would be no comeback this time around.

“I thought our kids did a nice job of making sure we didn’t let up in any area,” said Thomas. “I thought our kids stayed poised and were able to execute and because of that end up with a sound win.”

Dillon’s defense put the clamps to dangerous four-year Stevi starter Jared Shultz, who scored a team-high 12 points but hit just 4-of-11 from three-point land.

“We really tried to clamp down on him in all of our defenses,” said Thomas. “We thought if we made him work, over the course of four quarters that it would be to our advantage.”

Thomas rotated J.D. Ferris, Justin Ferris and Trae Williams on the Schultz defensive assignment.

On Friday, a second half sportsmanship fiasco by Corvallis made Dillon’s sledding easy through the semifinal game.

“I the second half, as we started to pull away, we kept our poise and Corvallis didn’t,” said Thomas. “They deserved each one of the technicals that they got.”

The referees tagged players Brigham Parish, Jayce Gilder and Andfew Leopold, as well as the Corvallis bench, with technicals.
