Southwestern A meet wraps regular running season

Beavers show consistent improvement

Dillon’s runners head to Hamilton for the Southwestern A Divisional Invitational, their last meet of the regular season before the state cross country championships next week.

Coach Betty Iverson lists Sage Schoonen Isaiah Girard Luke Harper Hunter Clark Colton Buckmaster David Casey and Joel Rivera are expected to represent the Beaverehead County High School boys’ varsity.

Caleigh Buckmaster, Hannah Telling, Jordan Peterson, Audrey Schurg, Jordynn Schindler, Annie Anderson and Kathleen Tatarka will likely be running for the girls.

The meet will be held at the Hamilton  golf course. Race times are 10:30 a.m., junior varsity girls; 11:15 a.m., JV boys; noon, varsity girls; and 12:20 p.m., varsity boys. Iverson said she is hoping for a good turnout of fans.

Last Thursday’s Capital City 7-on-7 meet provided the young BCHS varsity a chance to perform on an individual basis, with the individual runners competing with their peers, by position — No. 1 with No. 1, No. 2 with No.2 and so on. Seven races were run, boys and girls together, and team points were tallied according to race position in each. Dillon finished more or less in the middle of the pack.

Several boys achieved their personal best times, including Colton Buckmaster for the sixth time in seven races, Casey, who improved by 30 seconds, Joel Rivera, who achieved his third PB this season, and Luke Harper, who improved by 10 seconds. Clark’s 18:40 was one of his best times this season. Schoonen and Harper are the only two Dillon veterans of the 7 on 7.

Caleigh Buckmaster improved her time over last year’s race by a minute, 13 seconds. She continues to be dominant among the BCHS girls. However, teammates Annie Anderson and Audrey Schurg got career personal bests, the former by 27 seconds.

“She ran the best race by far – trading places with a young man for the last 400 meters and she outsprinted him at the finish,” Iverson said. “Audrey’s PB was 35 seconds over her Mountain West time and her fifth in seven races. Caleigh was only three seconds off of a PB and Hannah (Telling)’s was a personal best for this year by 33 seconds.”

Team scoring for the 7-on 7-meet was based on the place of each school’s runner in his or her race.
